California has so many beautiful destinations that no matter where you are, there’s always something equally mind blowing and enticing just a drive away. For those who want to take advantage of that, here are some ideas for day trips you can take out of Monterey during your next stay.
Located just about an hour south of Monterey, Big Sur is one of the most breathtaking natural attractions in the world. It’s a state park with magnificent trees and wildlife that’s most well known for massive coastal cliffs and gorgeous sunset outlooks.
Located about the same distance away in the opposite direction of Big Sur, Santa Cruz is one of the Central Coast’s most well known and popular beach towns. Come here for sunshine, great food and live music.
An iconic American city, San Francisco need not be sold. It is busy, loud and quite expensive, so rather than staying there for your whole getaway, check it out on a day trip from Monterey. Just a couple hours north of Monterey and The Sanctuary Beach Resort, a number of San Francisco day-trip activities await—i.e. relaxing Golden Gate Park, getting amazing Chinese food, and checking out the Castro.
Some might see this as an unusual tourism destination, but over the last decade, Palo Alto has become a globally influential force. Taking the short hour-and-a-half drive from Monterey could be well worth touring the storied campuses of companies like Google and Facebook.
The National Parks
This would be an ambitious day trip, but if you’re willing to get up early and put some driving in, Sierra National Forest, Kings Canyon National Park, and Sequoia National Park are all under four hours from Monterey. The magnificent sequoia trees and giant rock faces are worth the car time for a lot of outdoors enthusiasts.
Book here to stay with The Sanctuary Beach Resort this fall.
