#SlowFoods in Monterey: Essential Spots for a Long Meal

There’s something special about a long, relaxing meal that leaves you stuffed and lost in good conversation at the table well through dessert. We believe such meals are best enjoyed in a gorgeous atmosphere, such as our home here in Monterey, California.

Enjoy some #slowfoods at these essential spots for a long meal in Monterey.

The Crossroads BBQ

One of the best kinds of long meals you can enjoy is one that the chef took their time preparing. No other genre of food is as better known for the slow-cook as barbecue, and The Crossroads BBQ here in Monterey carries the tradition well. Come here for traditional American fixings along with some of the best cuts of steak in town.

Our pro tip: enjoy one of the BBQ sandwiches with a side of potato salad, coleslaw, or beans. Among the across-the-board great list of options, the tri-tip and St. Louis-style pork ribs might be the most memorable. There are also full-meal combinations, and quintessential desserts like berry cobbler, bread pudding, and root beer floats.

Pig Wizard

You could while away another evening or afternoon at the other barbecue powerhouse in Monterey—Pig Wizard. This meat and sandwich shop offers some slow-cooked American favorites, as well as a unique list of sides, and a choice location by the water on Monterey’s world-famous Cannery Row.

Porchetta is a centerpoint of Pig Wizard’s menu, and those looking for a long relaxing meal in the heart of town can indulge in the porchetta sandwich, porchetta gravy dip, or porchetta poutine. Scotch eggs and fresh hot pork rinds are some of the other unique and delicious sides offered here. You can also build your own sausage roll choosing from a number of unique sausages, breads, and toppings.

Wave Street Cafe

The Wave Street Cafe is a European-style bistro with a picturesque outdoor patio along the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail that’s just begging for diners to take their time. Breakfast is served all day long, and the restaurant is open from the early morning through mid afternoon throughout the week.

Wholesome food and generous servings also encourage visitors slow down. We love the over-stuffed breakfast burrito, slow cooked oatmeal, beef hash and eggs, and the calamari steak and eggs. Off course, you could go lighter, opting for a refreshing salad instead. Either way, take the time to savor the moment.

Tarpy’s Roadhouse

Tarpy’s is a spacious American restaurant off the Salinas Highway with a gorgeous, landscaped garden patio. Away from the bustle in town, it’s a true escape that deserves time to enjoy. Shared plates are the way to go here. We recommend the locally-grown Castroville artichoke, steak and deviled eggs, and the Sriracha-glazed ribs. You can also dig into entrees, like the slow-cooked chop-smoked brisket, the truffle grilled cheese, and classic Tarpy’s meatloaf.

The Fish Hopper

The Fish Hopper is another Cannery Row favorite, located right on the wharf overlooking Monterey Bay. This picturesque dining room is one of the best dining views in Monterey, and it demands guests take their time to enjoy alongside a top-notch seafood meal.

Don’t miss the award-winning clam chowder, voted best in town for nine consecutive years. We’re also huge fans of the Dungeness crab-stuffed mushrooms for starters. Moving to your entree, we recommend the panko-crusted sand dabs, and the surf and turf.

Salt Wood Kitchen & Oysterette

Right here at Sanctuary Beach Resort, overlooking the sand dunes along Monterey Bay, Salt Wood’s bar, dining room, and al fresco patio have quickly become a favorite in the region for delicious seafood and California coastal cuisine. Linger over seasonal menus, including just-harvested oysters, along with local wines while chefs prepare dishes in the open kitchen.
